Term 2 in HSIE at Magdalene will provide highly anticipated and engaging learning opportunities for our students. Our HSIE staff and teachers are looking forward to a variety of upcoming experiences both within the college and on excursions. In the coming weeks, we have the following events happening outside the college:
- 10 History Elective will visit the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney on 11th May (Week 3)
- 10 History undertake a study at the Sydney Jewish Museum on 29th May (Week 6)
This term, our mandatory courses will study Ancient China, including a virtual site study of Xian and the Terracotta Warriors (Year 7 History), an in-depth analysis of liveability and why some cities are more desirable than others (Year 8 Geography), a comparative study of World War I and World War II complete with trench models and virtual site studies (Year 9 History) and an analysis of past and contemporary civil rights movements in the USA and Australia (Year 10 History).
In recent Year 9 History lessons, classes have been focussing on learning experiences that incorporate Assessment as Learning, criteria marking, and feedback. In 9HSI2, students and their teacher Mrs Russo have worked diligently to further build upon their skills as collaborative and independent learners who achieve improvement. In providing opportunities for student voice, feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Student evaluation and reflections on the activity included:
“I liked that we were able to choose how we wanted to learn. I also liked the class discussion, as when everyone shared their ideas I was able to gain insight into different things I wasn't thinking about before.”
“I absolutely loved the fact that we as students were able to take control of our learning, it gave me the opportunity to understand the marking criteria and aspects necessary when writing responses in class. I learned the importance of having a clear structure, being coherent, and reflecting back on the question when writing a response.”
“I learned how to properly edit my texts by referring back to the marking criteria and using sufficient terminology in my writing. I was able to edit other people's writing and understand how much to write and put into writing whilst aiming to answer the question and keep on track with the correct information and facts needed for the text.”
