Pentecost

Soon we will be celebrating the Feast of Pentecost, also known as the birthday of the church. According to Acts Chapter 2:

“2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

This amazing miracle was the beginning of the Jesus movement.  There were only about 120 believers on the Day of Pentetost, however, after Peter preached to the crowd another 3,000 were added to their number. Now the Church has grown to 2.2 billion believers around the world.

So who was there when this dramatic transformation took place? Safe to say all of the Apostles, Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, among others were present when the wave of power came upon them from the Holy Spirit.

Are we open to the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives? The power to heal us, the power to forgive, the power to transform our lives and to aid us in following Christ. It’s the same Holy Spirit that animated Mary Magdalene, St Francis and Mother Teresa. The same Holy Spirit at work in Pope Francis. In light of this power that dwells within us, we are called to a relationship of love with Jesus and with others.
