Pope Leo XIV
As we bid a fond farewell to Pope Francis our attention turns to Pope Leo XIV who has the unenviable task of continuing the reforms of Francis and racing out to the marginalised as well as somehow dealing with a plethora of opinions of how to run a church - and that’s just from inside the Vatican. We hope and pray in this Jubilee Year that Leo will lead the church in a way that draws all Catholics closer to Christ.
Reconciliation Week
Next week is Reconciliation week in Australia: “Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.” (Reconciliation website)
AS Pope John Paul II said in 1986 while addressing Aboriginal Peoples in Alice Springs:
“But for thousands of years you have lived in this land and fashioned a culture that endures to this day. And during all this time, the Spirit of God has been with you. Your "Dreaming", which influences your lives so strongly that, no matter what happens, you remain forever people of your culture, is your only way of touching the mystery of God’s Spirit in you and in creation. You must keep your striving for God and hold on to it in your lives.” (Vatican Website)
Let us walk together as Australians, from all cultures, with our beautiful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters as we continue our journey through life.
