Importance of physical activity
During these changing times, the importance of regular physical activity remains crucial. Our participation and involvement has changed as a result of the restrictions for organised sports, fitness areas and centres, however, options to be physically active are possible around the home environment and adhering to the social distancing guidelines. Some of these options include:
- Fitness based activities that can be completed at home (inside or outside) such as:
- Design and complete a body weight circuit (of 5-10 activities) ranging in time from 30 - 60 seconds. These activities can include skipping, sit-ups, push-ups, burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, tricep dips, lunges, squats.
- These activities can also be completed individually and provide a break after sitting for periods of time.
- Go for a 20 minute (or longer) walk or jog.
- Sport based activities such as :
- Kicking a football outside.
- Playing handball against a wall.
- Shooting some basketball hoops.
- Fitness based apps or youtube and online resources:
- Yoga or pilates session (For example - Yoga with Adrienne https://yogawithadriene.com/yoga-for-teens/)
- Mindfulness guided meditation (Suggested apps include Smiling Minds, Headspace)
- Fitness apps such as the 7-minute workout, 30-day fitness challenge.
It is important to remember that physical activity provides many benefits for all aspects of our health and this is highly relevant to young people in these changing times. Students are encouraged to consider these options above not only to help balance all aspects of their health but to provide variety as we continue to be engaged in the online learning environment.
