Dear parents, carers and students,
Last Sunday we celebrated Ascension Sunday, marking the ascension of Jesus into Heaven. Historically, this holy day has been celebrated 40 days after Easter Sunday, which falls on the Thursday of the sixth week of Easter, however most dioceses move this celebration to the seventh Sunday of Easter. The ascension describes Christ’s transition from earth to heaven after his life, ministry, death and resurrection. Significantly, it sees the fulfilment of the promise to His followers that he would soon pour out the Holy Spirit on them and in them.
Last Sunday also marked Mothers Day and gave us the opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for the mothers, grandmothers and mother figures in our lives. Here at Magdalene we took the opportunity to hold an inaugural Mothers Day Breakfast and were absolutely delighted with how many visitors took the opportunity to join us on Wednesday morning with well over 200 guests gathering in the Allan McManus Hall. I take the opportunity to thank each and every one of our visitors and sincerely thank the many staff who worked to bring this event together. We look forward to hosting a similar event later in the year to mark Fathers Day.
Our Mother’s Day breakfast proved to be the ideal introduction to what was yet another successful Pink Stumps Day. This fundraising event has evolved into a significant community day on our College calendar which saw in excess of $3000 raised for the McGrath Foundation which supports the provision of breast care nurses for those in and around our community. Again, I thank all the students and staff who supported this really worthwhile event.
Earlier this week we hosted the Parent/Teacher/Student interviews for Year 11 and 12. I take the opportunity to thank all parents who made themselves available and I hope that the evening provided a valuable opportunity to receive a range of worthwhile and actionable feedback that will help direct our students over the coming months.
Finally, I take the opportunity to remind all parents and carers that the Term 2 P&F Meeting will be held this coming Tuesday evening from 7pm in the College library. All are welcome to join us for this gathering.

Congratulations to two Year 9 students, Giselle McCarthy and Aliyah Plummer who have been selected as the only two Camden girls to represent NSW in State of Origin for Under 14’s Oztag in September.
Selected from a pool of talented contenders at the State Oztag Championship in Coffs Harbour back in February, these girls have earned a place among the state's best. For them, this represents more than just a spot on a team; it's a validation of their hard work, commitment and love of the game.
We're all super proud of you, especially your family and friends, and we can't wait to see you shine on the State of Origin stage. Good Luck later this year ladies!
Year 11 Celebration of Success
Congratulations to Riley Bentham (11H) who has been named in the 2024 u/18 NSW Country Junior Rugby Union squad. He will participate in a 3-day camp between May 24th and 26th in Gunnedah, before a final 23-man team is named to take on the Schools Rugby Union teams, and City Teams in June/July. This is a significant achievement, with making the initial squad is a major feat in itself. Riley has also been selected for the 2024 u/18 Illawarra Representative team. The College is proud of Riley’s efforts and we wish him all the best.
Well done to our Year 9 and Year 10 MISA debating teams who have both successfully progressed to the quarter finals of their respective competitions!
Year 10 finished 1st overall in the standard competition and Year 9 finished 3rd overall. This is an impressive effort and a testament to the dedication, enthusiasm, and assiduity of both our teams.
In their most recent debate against Macarthur Anglican School, Year 10 were asked to debate the topic, “That we should disallow foreign ownership of business and property in Australia”, and as the negative team, had to disagree with the topic. This was a difficult side to argue but Year 10 were commended on the depth of their arguments and ability to sustain a cohesive argument amongst all speakers. The team also worked well to develop thematic rebuttals against the opposing side, and as a result, won their debate. Well done Isibeal, Lachlan, Sienna, Melina and Bronte!
In the same round, Year 9 were asked to debate the topic, “That government healthcare should prioritise the elderly”, and also had to disagree with the topic as the negative team. Year 9 developed a complex argument, focusing on the importance of preventative health care and mental health initiatives for other populations, but were narrowly defeated. Well done to Taylor, Madeline, Valentina, Laura and Lauren for your perseverance and efforts in a challenging debate.
We wish our Year 9 and Year 10 debating teams the best of luck as they prepare for the quarter finals!

Since the return of Term 2, Yr 12 musicians Emilia Leopardi (vocals), Myah Donohue (vocals), Chloe Rice (vocals), Liam Donnelly (drums), Ethan Williams (bass guitar), Joseph Piefke (rhythm and lead guitar), and Alexander Cooper-Crowley (rhythm, lead and vocals) have been busy rehearsing a set list of pieces in preparation for the PINK STUMPS Day lunch concert. The band enthusiastically entertained a large crowd of students and performed a range of musical styles from a fast paced version of ‘Ballroom Blitz’ to the College Song ‘I Have Seen the Lord’. The students are to be commended on their preparations and contributions to the success of Pink Stumps Day at MCC.
What have our Scientists been up to???
Year 11 Investigating Science - leaching toxins from food
In our practical investigation focused on cause and effect through inferences and generalisations, we delved into the acidity levels of lime, strawberry, and chili through a leaching experiment followed by pH testing using universal indicator solution. This investigative approach models the practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have long utilised observation and inference in their traditional knowledge systems, particularly in relation to bush tucker. As we mimicked the leaching process, we used 4 beakers to observe if the amount of time the food samples were in the water affected the acidity level. The subsequent pH tests unveiled intriguing patterns, similar to the meticulous observations made by Indigenous communities to understand the properties of bush tucker.
Lime, known for its tangy flavour, exhibited the highest acidity level, reflected vividly in the strong red colouration of the indicator solution. Meanwhile, strawberries, though still acidic, presented a milder pH compared to lime, showcasing a slightly less intense color change. Chilli, typically associated with heat rather than acidity, surprisingly revealed that it was quite neutral and after carrying out the leaching process became a deeper green colour than what was started with. This hands-on exploration not only allowed us to observe the varying acidity levels within the tested foods but also facilitated broader insights into the causes and effects of acidity in natural substances. Through our experiment, we were able to make informed inferences and draw generalisations about acidity, contributing to a deeper comprehension of cause-and-effect relationships in scientific inquiry, mirroring the traditional practices of Indigenous peoples in understanding the properties of bush tucker.

This week we welcomed Mr Yuhong Li to the Mathematics Faculty. Mr Li will be filling the position previously held by Mr Ian Clark. I would like to extend my appreciation to all staff who assisted with teaching and preparing additional lessons during the transition period.
Assessment Schedules
The Mathematics Resource Centre (available through Compass, on the star dropdown menu) provides Assessment Schedules for all Mathematics courses. While students will receive Assessment Notifications for formal Assessment Tasks via Google Classroom, reviewing the Assessment Schedule in advance can help students to begin preparing for their tasks earlier and allow them to have more time to identify areas where they may need additional study or practice.
Additionally, students are encouraged to utilise the range of resources available in the Mathematics Resource Centre to supplement their learning in the classroom and further enhance their understanding of mathematical concepts.

The Birthday Paradox illustrates that in a group of only 23 individuals, there is a greater than 50% chance that two people will share the same birthday. This phenomenon is a result of probability and combinatorial principles.

The start to Term 2 has been filled with enthusiasm from both teachers and students about upcoming excursions, class activities, and opportunities.
Year 7 HSIE
Our Year 7 History students undertook a site study to view the ‘Rameses and the God of the Pharaohs’ exhibition at the Australian Museum on Friday 10th May (Week 2). This site study provided a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history of ancient Egypt, particularly the era of the pharaohs, by exploring artefacts, sculptures, and inscriptions associated with Rameses II, one of Egypt's most celebrated pharaohs.
Year 8 HSIE
In our Year 8 Geography lessons we have been exploring landscapes and landforms using examples from Australia and throughout the world. 8HSI3 recently completed a collaborative study where they composed a response that examined the impact of natural hazards on the biosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. This activity further developed our student's ability to integrate examples and geographical terminology in their written responses.
On Friday 3rd May, our Year 8 Geography students attended the mandatory fieldwork at Wentworth Falls. The excursion provided a valuable fieldwork experience, whilst promoting and engaging learners in working with geographical skills.
Year 9 HSIE
Year 9 HSIE have been busy learning about the physical characteristics and productivity of biomes. Focusing on the correlation between the world’s climatic zones and spatial distributions of biomes and their capacity to support food and non-food agricultural production. A particular area of interest amongst students was analysing the impact that humans have on the world's biomes.
There has also been peer mentoring occurring in our HSIE classrooms this year. Our students from 9HSI4 report that:
“In our geography subject this term, we embark on a journey filled with excitement and discovery. As we delve into the topic of mapping skills, we looked into the complex world of topographic maps, exploring the development of agriculture, where it originated, and how it has influenced different cultures over time. Furthermore, we touch upon the protection of our precious biomes, recognising the vital role they play in sustaining life on Earth and protecting biodiversity.
But the fun doesn't stop there! We engaged in collaborative activities with our younger peers, the year 8's, fostering a dynamic learning environment where knowledge is shared and skills are developed. Together, we guide them in constructing IDEAL paragraphs, applying their understanding of the four different spheres to make intricate observations and record data. Through this collaboration, we not only deepen our own understanding but also empower the next generation of geographers to utilise these skills for future tasks and real-world experiences.
Central to our success is the guidance of our remarkable teacher, Mrs. Russo. With her expertise and unwavering support, she empowers us to explore geographic concepts with depth and precision. Mrs. Russo provides constructive feedback that fuels our growth, fostering an environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for learning and improvement!”

Year 11 Business Studies
Year 11 Business Studies have been learning about the importance of business management and the skills of an effective manager. In teams, students were given the challenge of building the tallest tower possible in 30 minutes using only 20 sticks of uncooked spaghetti, a marshmallow, and a roll of sticky tape. Students were able to develop their communication and problem-solving skills, whilst still having to be adaptable to change.

Creative Contemporary Workshop
On Friday 3rd May, Sydney Dance Company visited our Magdalene community and ran a Creative Contemporary workshop with our Year 9 Dance Elective students. It was a unique opportunity to experience how the company creates and performs new and original movements. Dancers were guided through a contemporary technique warm up, learnt repertoire from a work called ab [intra] and completed two compositional tasks.
Students were challenged throughout the incursion and it allowed them to step out of their comfort zones and to experiment with different movements instead of always reaching for known and comfortable ones. The students will be focusing on composition for the remainder of the term.











In the classroom
Our Term 2 unit focuses on stimulus, the starting point for movement discovery in dance composition. Students are provided with opportunities to explore a variety of stimuli to generate original movement, including auditory, visual, tactile, kinaesthetic or ideational. Students will brainstorm, identify and discuss different stimuli for dance, and will develop concepts and ideas from specific stimuli. Classroom activities centre on the processes of exploring, reflecting, evaluating and selecting appropriate movement material based on ideas.
Students revisited Space, Time and Dynamics through a competitive card game activity and have also started to explore how they can create movement in relation to a specific stimulus. Year 9 will be receiving their assessment task in the coming weeks which will allow them to create a dance work to convey an idea based on stimuli. Students have been having some fun creating new movements and will continue to be challenged in the dance studio.

Magdalene Shines is a performing arts evening showcasing outstanding students Drama, Dance, MISA Dance team, Music students and Ensembles from Years 7- 12.

Year 10 Visual Arts student Amarli-Rose Blanchette is to be commended on her outstanding promotional design for SHINES 2024. Special thanks to all Year 10 Visual Arts students for their contribution and participation in creating a successful design.
Duke of Edinburgh Award Update
As part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Participants are required to complete a period of Voluntary Service in the broader community. In this component of the Award, spend a minimum of one (1) hour per week at a charitable or non-profit organisation, giving back by volunteering their time for the betterment of others.
In 2024 we have participants volunteering in a wide range of different areas for example Lucinda Wiggins (10C) and Georgia Bray (10D) are two Silver Award Participants volunteering at Carrington Aged Care in Camden. We received word of some outstanding work these two participants have been doing at Carrington particularly setting up a Mother's Day display for some elderly residents who were, by all reports, extremely moved by the kind and thoughtful gesture.
Congratulations and thank you to both Lucinda and Georgia, for the time and care you are putting into your Voluntary Service, along with the way you have been outstanding ambassadors for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Magdalene Catholic College.
In addition to these two Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Participants, this year we have students volunteering in a range of different areas including (but not limited to) Churches and various religious charities such as St Vincent de Paul, Rural Fire Service, Red Cross, and various local sporting clubs including “Macarthur Magic”, an inclusive soccer program for kids and young adults in the Macarthur region. We look forward to hearing about the great work Participants are doing in our local community and celebrating these achievements in the future.

St Vincent de Paul Society Winter Appeal
We are excited to share information about the invaluable work of the St Vincent de Paul Society and their Camden Hub, which serves as a lifeline for many in our local community. The Camden Hub provides immediate support to those in need, offering essential items such as food, groceries, clothing, and other everyday essentials. Their services are crucial for individuals and families facing difficult circumstances.
This term, we are asking for your support in contributing to this important cause. Each grade has been assigned a category to raise donations for, which will be packed and donated at the College Winter Sleepout on the 14th of June. Please see the list of items that can be donated in the attached poster.
Your generosity can make a significant difference in the lives of those who rely on the services provided by the Camden Hub. By coming together as a community, we can make a meaningful impact and support those who are most vulnerable.
If you would like to contribute, your child can bring their donations to the tubs in the Pavilion by the 14th of June. Together, we can make a difference and help support our neighbours in need.

Join Us for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out at Magdalene!
We are excited to offer our students the opportunity to participate in a national event at a local level. Magdalene will host the St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out from Friday, 14th June to Saturday, 15th June.
The event aims to raise awareness about the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society in our community through guest speakers, community-building activities, games, movie screenings, small group discussions, and lots of fun! We will provide afternoon tea, dinner, and supper on Friday evening, as well as breakfast on Saturday morning.
Event Details:
- Date: Friday, 14th June - Saturday, 15th June
- Time: 4:00 pm (Friday) - 9:00 am (Saturday)
- Participants: Students from Years 10, 11, and 12, along with staff
- Pre-Sleep Out Activities: Students can stay at school from 2:35 pm on Friday for sport and recreational activities or return by 4:00 pm for the sleepout
The Magdalene Winter Sleep Out offers students a unique educational experience, allowing them to understand and empathise with those experiencing homelessness and poverty. This event supports the vital work of the St Vincent de Paul Society in our local community, a Catholic charity dedicated to helping those experiencing poverty.

Western Sydney University NURSING and MIDWIFREY IMMERSION DAY.
Students from Year 10, 11 and 12 attended Western Sydney University -Campbelltown campus to learn about the undergraduate Nursing and Midwifery programs available and the various entry pathways into such courses.
The students also had the opportunity to explore Western’s Clinical Practice Units, where they participate in interactive activities. They then participated in a quick tour of the campus. The students found this a very informative experience and for some, the day solidified their intent to study one of the courses on offer once they finish school.
YEAR 10 CAMDEN CAREERS EXPO
On Tuesday, Year 10 students attended the Camden Career Expo where they had access to a variety of Industry representatives, Universities and employment agencies. Overall the students found the experience worthwhile and feedback from the industry reps was that the students had some very mature and well thought out questions.
AIRFORCE WORK EXPERIENCE
Between the 8 and 10th of May I was fortunate enough to be involved in the Air Force familiarisation program at Williamstown. For three days I was exposed to the innumerable amount of jobs and career paths that the Air Force provided. I was able to understand how the Air Force is able to work together effectively considering the amount of people and different industries involved. The work experience program allowed me to expand my knowledge about the industries involved and the various roles that I can take up that compliment my interests. As the F-35 blasted our eardrums and rocked the base, the life of an Air force member was revealed to me. I am very grateful for the opportunity that I was given.
