Dear Parents, Carers and Students,
Last week’s Gospel reading recounted how the people were hungry to hear Jesus preach and teach. When they found Him, He wasn’t who they hoped for. Jesus says to them: “You are looking for me not because you saw signs and wonders. You come to me only because you ate your fill of the loaves!” He goes on to tell them that He is the bread of life, and faith in Him will fulfill their spiritual hunger. This is a powerful statement that encourages us to ask ourselves: Why do we Come to Jesus and how does our faith in Him influence our relationships with others. I would like to think that His presence in the lives of our Magdalene community members is exemplified in the relationships and the positive way we interact with each other.
Last week we had a team of 63 students represent Magdalene at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival. Our athletes showcased their exceptional talent and sportsmanship, securing an outstanding victory, overall First! This achievement is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support from our teachers and families. Congratulations to all our athletes for their incredible performances. Their achievement not only brings pride to our College but also sets a shining example of teamwork and perseverance.
This week our Year 12 Students began their Trial Higher School Certificate Examinations. I want to commend all Year 12 students for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. The Trial HSC exams are a crucial milestone in their academic journey, offering an opportunity to gauge their progress and fine-tune their preparation for the final HSC exams. I encourage Year 12 to use this time wisely, focus on your strengths and areas for improvement, and remember to balance study with self-care. Best of luck to everyone as you prepare for these important assessments.
Yesterday was the Feast of Mary of The Cross MacKillop. Two Year 9 Students, Dylan Teuma and Giusppina Vecchio, accompanied me to a Diocesan Mass celebrated by Bishop Brian Mascord in honour of our Australian Saint. Mary MacKillop was an Australian nun and educator who founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. She is known for her dedication to education and care for the poor, particularly in rural and isolated communities. Mary MacKillop’s motto of “Never seeing a need without doing something about it” aligns with our College value of service and discipleship and we can proudly say that our students strive to fulfill this motto each day.
Next week, August 15, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, a significant event in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. On this solemn feast, we honor the belief that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was assumed body and soul into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.
Wishing you the best for the weeks ahead.
Mrs Forner
Acting Principal
This term, learning and teaching at Magdalene is in full effect, featuring a diverse array of educational activities and assessment experiences for our students. Term 3 is important, particularly, in the areas of examination and subject selection. We have the following curriculum-related events this term:

Magdalene Feast Day Mass - Musicians
Term 3, Week 1 was a busy time for Music staff and student musicians with the Magdalene Feast Day Mass on Thursday 25 July. Year 12 students enthusiastically attended lunch rehearsals on their first day of the new term and quickly designated leadership roles within the Music Ensemble. Vocalists Emilia Leopardi, Myah Donohue, Chloe Rice and Chelsea Clapson performed beautiful vocal melodies with secure and carefully considered harmonies. Our vocalists were perceptively accompanied by Alexander Cooper-Crowley on keyboard, Ethan Williams on bass guitar, Joseph Piekfe on electric guitar and Liam Donnelly on the drum kit. Our Year 12 students are to be acknowledged for their positive contributions and significant musical contribution to the celebratory occasion.

Magdalene Feast Day - Music Performances
Year 12 students took responsibility late last term to create an extensive ‘playlist’ of repertoire in preparation to perform and entertain the Magdalene community at our Feast Day celebrations on Friday 26 July. Music students and staff moved staging and rock band music equipment to the Fair to create an outdoor performance space to ensure access to the students and the festivities. Special thanks to Year 12 Music students, Year 12 vocalists, Year 9 Music students and performers.

College Assembly
The Music Department would like to acknowledge Chelsea Clapson on her energetic and stylistic vocal performance of ‘Valerie’ at the College Assembly in Week 2. Performing at such events early in the term can be challenging, however Chelsea was very prepared and capably accompanied by Alexander Cooper-Crowley, Joseph Piekfe, Ethan Williams and Liam Donnelly. Year 9 and Year 10 Music Ensemble students are currently preparing performances for future College Assemblies to be held later in Term 3.
National Anthem Volunteers
Our Creative and Performing Arts Councillors for 2024 Emilia Leopardi and Myah Donohue currently alternate the duties of leading the singing of the National Anthem at official school functions. However, all students at the College are invited to lead the singing at College events and any inspired vocalists are asked to register their interests with Ms Curtis.

Mary Mackillop’s Feast Day is 8th August and she is our Bruchhauser House Patron Saint. Mary Mackillop of the Cross was the first and only official saint who was born and lived in Australia.
Mary MacKillop was born on January 15, 1842, in Melbourne. She was the eldest of eight children born to Scottish immigrants. In 1867, Mary MacKillop co-founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart with Father Julian Tennison Woods. The order's mission was to provide education to children, particularly those in remote areas, and to care for the poor and needy. Mary MacKillop's life was marked by her deep devotion to God and her commitment to serving the poor and marginalized. She emphasized the importance of practical charity and caring for those in need. One of her famous sayings is: “Never see a need without doing something about it”.
Looking at the significance of Mary Mackillop, we see a strong and determined woman who was able to battle through suffering and persecution in order to achieve better outcomes for the poor and the needy across Australia and New Zealand. She valued education and realised that education was important in setting up young people for success in life. Just like Mary Magdalene, Mary Mackillop was generous, courageous, devoted to God and committed to serving others in the name of Jesus. Hopefully we can learn from Mary Mackillop and Mary Magdalene and begin to devote ourselves more strongly to following Jesus and the Gospel values.
Prayer:
God of all blessings, you revealed in Mary MacKillop a sensitivity to the rights and dignity of every person, regardless of race or creed. May we learn from her to overcome the obstacles of prejudice and fear. Help us to value the goodness of each person and all the blessings of unity in diversity.
We ask this through the depth and unity of you, our bountiful God, who hold all things in being. Amen
What have out scientists been up to?
7E Science – Changing States of Matter experiment.
In Science we are learning about the states of matter and how they can change state. Today we were observing how the ice changed from a solid to a liquid and then to gas.
We added 5 ice cubes to a conical flask, placed a balloon on top and heated it using a Bunsen burner. As the water was heated and started to boil, the particles gained energy, which caused them to move faster. Eventually, the force of attraction between the particles could no longer hold them together, causing the water to change from a liquid to a gas. This caused the balloon it to inflate.

7SCIE conducted a science experiment, which involved investigating changing states of matter. We melted ice (a solid) in a conical flask, which changed into water (a liquid), which then changed into water vapour (a gas). This caused the balloon to inflate.
We had lots of fun!!!!!!!!
7E Science – Changing States of Matter experiment.
In year seven we are learning about the particle model and the changing states of matter. Our experiment today showed changing states of matter in a simple and easy-to-understand way. We had a balloon attached to a conical flask and ice was inside the conical flask. We heated it until the water boiled and turned into water vapour. After this we let the equipment cool down. Once cooled, we ran the flask under cold water and the balloon deflated. This is because of the temperature changed the water vapour and it became water once again.
