- Alfred Foods - A letter to our Magdalene Community
Magdalene’s response to COVID-19
I would like to personally thank our parent/carer and student community for their fantastic response to incredibly trying circumstances in recent weeks.
I do appreciate that you may feel inundated with recent communications from the College. However, I have to say I am very impressed by the way in which our students have embraced their new online platform and the way in which they have shown resilience, planning and hard work.
I commend our teachers as well as they accustom themselves to new online learning arrangements and protocols.
This stated, while we are hearing positive stories and feedback, we strongly encourage parents/carers to contact the relevant teacher, Leader of Learning or Year Coordinator if they need support or if there are any questions at all about lessons or Google Classroom. If there are any issues with direct communication with an individual, please contact the College Office.
Financial Difficulties
We are completely aware that recent shutdowns and business closures will make financial challenges a reality for many families.
Please remember (as per my letter “Measures to support families through the COVID-19 situation” on Wednesday) that Catholic Education Wollongong has provided the option for families to defer payment for up to four months and that the offer to seek fee support is a genuine one.
I will be speaking to our P & F early next term about ways in which we can promote businesses that have a connection to the Magdalene community when the COVID-19 situation improves in the future.
ENROLMENT APPLICATIONS – Year 7 2021
Please note that the deadline for applications (April 6) has not changed. Late applications will still be accepted – but we do make a clear note about the date/s when applications are submitted, and this may or may not impact on possible enrolment. Obviously, we would show understanding to anyone who was directly impacted by COVID-19 who submits a late application.
Given the potential issues of meeting with individuals, face-to-face and in close proximity, the College is currently exploring what enrolment interviews may look like next term.
Supporting Online Learning and At Home Learning Tips for Students/Parents/Carers
Supporting Online Learning
Miss Stephanie Phillips, Leader of Teaching and Learning
In the past week, a new world of learning has opened up for parents, students and teachers. At Magdalene Catholic College, we remain committed to providing quality learning with students at the centre of all we do. Our staff have dedicated themselves to producing appropriate and challenging online learning experiences and we thank parents for their support of student learning.
There has been much communication from the College regarding the transition to online learning, updated HSC assessment requirements and guidelines for students during this period. Please ensure that you are familiar with critical documents (shared through COMPASS) including, Online Assessment Guidelines: HSC, Assessment 7-12 and Online Learning: Parent Letter (a student version has also been sent).
To read information from NESA relating to COVID-19 and the HSC, the cancellation of NAPLAN and online learning, please use the following link:
At the forefront of our minds is the need to support students. We acknowledge that learning how to learn online can be a challenge and again encourage communication with our staff regarding this. Pastoral Teachers are providing small online tasks to their pastoral classes to continue teacher/student communication and monitor student engagement. Teaching staff are following processes to call home if a student has not been engaging with online content or completing tasks for multiple lessons.
We encourage students to set up an organised study space and have a routine each day. Some students may elect to follow their daily timetable, including break times. Senior students especially may review work set for the day and create their own daily plan for how to best complete their learning. Regardless of their approach, students must be completing set tasks, enjoying adequate breaks with some physical activity and having some time away from technology each day.
As we continue to learn together, parents are encouraged to contact subject teachers or pastoral teachers with relevant questions. If there are further concerns or questions, please contact one of the following members of staff: Mr Shaun Houghton, Curriculum Coordinator - Assessments and Learning Concerns houghtons01@dow.catholic.edu.au Miss Stephanie Phillips, Leader of Teaching and Learning - Learning Concerns phillipss01@dow.catholic.edu.au Mrs Ivana Forner, Pastoral Care Coordinator - Pastoral / Wellbeing Concerns |

Importance of physical activity
During these changing times, the importance of regular physical activity remains crucial. Our participation and involvement has changed as a result of the restrictions for organised sports, fitness areas and centres, however, options to be physically active are possible around the home environment and adhering to the social distancing guidelines. Some of these options include:
- Fitness based activities that can be completed at home (inside or outside) such as:
- Design and complete a body weight circuit (of 5-10 activities) ranging in time from 30 - 60 seconds. These activities can include skipping, sit-ups, push-ups, burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, tricep dips, lunges, squats.
- These activities can also be completed individually and provide a break after sitting for periods of time.
- Go for a 20 minute (or longer) walk or jog.
- Sport based activities such as :
- Kicking a football outside.
- Playing handball against a wall.
- Shooting some basketball hoops.
- Fitness based apps or youtube and online resources:
- Yoga or pilates session (For example - Yoga with Adrienne https://yogawithadriene.com/yoga-for-teens/)
- Mindfulness guided meditation (Suggested apps include Smiling Minds, Headspace)
- Fitness apps such as the 7-minute workout, 30-day fitness challenge.
It is important to remember that physical activity provides many benefits for all aspects of our health and this is highly relevant to young people in these changing times. Students are encouraged to consider these options above not only to help balance all aspects of their health but to provide variety as we continue to be engaged in the online learning environment.
Mrs Andruschko
On Friday March 13, students in the Year 10 Elective Music class, attended a concert by the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra at City Recital Hall, Sydney. The program for the evening was titled ‘Vivaldi’s Venice’ and featured passionate and sought-after French harpist Xavier de Maistre. The concert featured technically demanding and expressive performances of Baroque repertoire from Vivaldi to Marcello. The students were inspired by the performances and repertoire presented, which complimented the current unit of Baroque Music being studied in class. Special thanks to Mrs Curtis and Mr Mäe for attending on the evening.

Thursday, 26th March 2020
Due to the current global and national health crisis presently being experienced, we regretfully advise, that our annual Appin Massacre Memorial Ceremony scheduled for Sunday, 19th April 2020 has been cancelled.
As a sign of mourning and respect, we would kindly request that your school fly your flags at half-mast on Friday, 17th April, 2020 in honour of the Dharawal people, who sadly lost their lives on this day in 1816.
It is important to Remember and Acknowledge the Massacre of the known 14 Dharawal men, women and children, as we owe them a great deal.
We hope and pray all staff and students have a safe and happy holiday.
Yours sincerely,

Alfred Foods - A letter to our Magdalene Community
To our valued customers,
During these challenging and uncertain times, we have seen the widespread struggle of the broader Sydney community to obtain goods from local supermarkets.
