Dear parents, carers and students,
In last week’s Gospel reading, we heard of Jesus giving his disciples a new commandment, “to love one another as I have loved you”. He explains that this demonstration of love is one crucial way that others would recognise that they are followers of his. The same can be said for us in this day and age. It is in the way that we care for, and support each other, particularly those who are most marginalised, that we may also be recognised as followers of His.
Earlier this week we saw the inauguration Mass for Pope Leo XIV take place in St Peter’s Square in Vatican City. Given the age of Pope Leo, it could indeed be an event that we do not see again for another 20 years. Having been influenced by the papacy of Pope Francis over the last 12 years, especially in the areas of social justice and environmental stewardship, as a school community, we eagerly await the impact that the new Pontiff has on us and the work that we do.
At our College assembly last week, I took the opportunity to update students on a couple of focus areas that we have been addressing this year. Specifically, I spoke about our efforts to further improve attendance and punctuality. In highlighting the importance of regular school attendance, I was very pleased to discuss the 30% reduction in absences that we have seen this year. Additionally, compared to this time last year, there has been a 50% reduction in late arrivals. I mentioned that this equates to fewer interruptions when students enter classrooms and a greater focus on the learning taking place. I thank all members of our community who have contributed to this improvement and look forward to even greater improvements moving forward.
Earlier this week, we held our Term 2 Parents and Friends Meeting here at the College. Attendees had the opportunity to hear about a number of initiatives and opportunities that are taking place this year at the College, including our involvement in the International Space Station Design Competition in Florida and our participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award program. I thank those who attended and once again invite parents and friends of the College to our Term 3 meeting on Tuesday 12th August.
As I mentioned in our last newsletter, we are once again participating in the Learning Bar survey this year. This survey is designed to offer the College feedback on areas of strength and identify areas for improvement. This survey can be accessed here and will remain open until this coming Friday 30th May. Thank you to all parents who have taken the time to complete this already.
Wishing you all the best for the week ahead.

Supporting Your Child’s HSC Success: Understanding ATAR Trajectories and Goal- Setting Conversations
As part of our ongoing support for students aiming for an ATAR, we are offering short, individual meetings to those Year 12 students who have already shared their ATAR goals with us in the past fortnight. These conversations will focus on each student’s academic progress to date and help them refine their efforts across all subjects as they work toward their post-school aspirations.
What is ATAR trajectory data?
ATAR trajectories are informed by state-wide trend data and provide a general estimate of the ATAR a student might be tracking toward, based on their midpoint progress and current results across subjects. While this data is not a guarantee or exact prediction, it can be a powerful tool for students to reflect on their progress, understand how each subject contributes to their final result, and identify practical ways to improve.
These voluntary meetings are aimed at students who are actively working toward an ATAR and want to better understand the link between effort, performance, and outcomes. The focus will be positive and supportive, guiding students to set achievable, subject-specific goals for the remainder of the HSC.
We encourage all parents and carers to speak with their sons and daughters about this opportunity. If your child is interested in reviewing their progress and exploring personalised strategies for improvement, they are welcome to contact Mr Houghton to arrange a time.
Together, we can ensure that students are informed, confident, and equipped to make the most of the months ahead.

Curriculum Updates
Year 11 Semester 1 Reports
Semester reports will be available for viewing via the Compass Parent Portal. These reports provide a detailed summary of each Year 11 student’s academic progress and achievements across all subjects, including outcome grades and an overall course grade. They also highlight learning habits, levels of engagement, and areas for improvement. Designed to inform families about current performance, the reports support meaningful discussions around learning, progress, and future goal setting. They also serve as a formal record aligned with curriculum requirements and school expectations. We encourage all families to review the report with their child and reach out to Subject Teachers or Leaders of Learning with any questions or concerns.

The Step Up Into Teaching (SUIT) Program ran in the September-October and January holidays. Jessica Vida, Year 12 Student participated in the program. She completed two units of her teaching degree at Australian Catholic University in Strathfield. In September, Jessica completed a unit on “Understanding Learning and Teaching”, focusing on educational psychology and understanding learner differences. Then in January she completed a unit on “Understanding learners and their contexts”, emphasising the importance of inclusivity in the classroom. Both Units ran for five days in the holiday periods. In undertaking the program, Jessica was required to complete two major assessment tasks and three quizzes. Jessica successfully passed both units with Distinctions. When asked what she enjoyed most about the program, Jessica explained that
“ I loved the program, as it gave me a chance to meet others who shared the same passion as me and the tutors and lecturers were extremely helpful. It gave me an understanding of how university works and has made the whole concept a lot less daunting. For anyone interested in teaching, I highly recommend the SUIT program because it eases the pressure about university admission and is an amazing experience. “
Congratulations Jessica! We look forward to having you join the teaching profession.
An unforgettable evening of music, dance, and drama showcasing our talented performers.

Pope Leo XIV
As we bid a fond farewell to Pope Francis our attention turns to Pope Leo XIV who has the unenviable task of continuing the reforms of Francis and racing out to the marginalised as well as somehow dealing with a plethora of opinions of how to run a church - and that’s just from inside the Vatican. We hope and pray in this Jubilee Year that Leo will lead the church in a way that draws all Catholics closer to Christ.
Reconciliation Week
Next week is Reconciliation week in Australia: “Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.” (Reconciliation website)
AS Pope John Paul II said in 1986 while addressing Aboriginal Peoples in Alice Springs:
“But for thousands of years you have lived in this land and fashioned a culture that endures to this day. And during all this time, the Spirit of God has been with you. Your "Dreaming", which influences your lives so strongly that, no matter what happens, you remain forever people of your culture, is your only way of touching the mystery of God’s Spirit in you and in creation. You must keep your striving for God and hold on to it in your lives.” (Vatican Website)
Let us walk together as Australians, from all cultures, with our beautiful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters as we continue our journey through life.

Year 7 Religion - Mr Cloran's Visit
On Monday, May 19th, 7RE2 had Mr Cloran visit our class in the Brothers House . While he was in the classroom, we tested him by asking simple questions first, like " Does pineapple belong on pizza?” Which it does, and what football team he likes best, which is the Manly Sea Eagles. He was a bit confused but soon learnt what we were doing.
After this, we were then quizzed on what we would change about the rules if we became the principal for a day, most answers varied from “no homework, to cheaper food at the canteen.” While doing all this, we timed each question to keep him on his toes. We then offered our ideas on things to improve in our school.
It was so good to have a chance to talk about what we thought. On top of this, Mr Cloran has taken our feedback on board and said that he would try to implement the appropriate feedback for our school's community.
We have learnt so much more about our principal, Mr Cloran and our peers.

St Vincent de Paul Society Winter Appeal
We are excited to share information about the invaluable work of the St Vincent de Paul Society and their Camden Hub, which serves as a lifeline for many in our local community. The Camden Hub provides immediate support to those in need, offering essential items such as food, groceries, clothing, and other everyday essentials. Their services are crucial for individuals and families facing difficult circumstances.
This term, we are asking for your support in contributing to this important cause. Each grade has been assigned a category to raise donations for, which will be packed and donated at the College Winter Sleepout on the 27th of June. Please see the list of items that can be donated in the attached poster.
Your generosity can make a significant difference in the lives of those who rely on the services provided by the Camden Hub. By coming together as a community, we can make a meaningful impact and support those who are most vulnerable.
If you would like to contribute, your child can bring their donations to their Pastoral Care Class basket by the 27th of June. Together, we can make a difference and help support our neighbours in need.
Thank you for your support and generosity.
Carrington Through Our Eyes Begins for 2025!
We are delighted to share that our much-loved Intergenerational Program with Carrington has officially begun for its 14th year! This special initiative connects our students with residents at Carrington in a meaningful and heartwarming way.
On Tuesday, 20th May, our students made their first visit, where they were placed in small groups and paired with a resident, some of whom are as young as 80 and others as old as 102! Students spent the afternoon getting to know their residents, listening to stories of their lives, families, and experiences. Many residents have lived full and remarkable lives, and their wisdom and warmth made a lasting impression on our young people.
All students returned to school smiling, inspired, and excited to return next week. Over the course of the term, they will be gathering stories, photos, and videos to create a beautiful video presentation that celebrates the lives and legacies of these inspiring individuals.
We are proud to continue this treasured partnership and look forward to the stories and memories that will unfold throughout the term.

Year 8 Reflection Day - Rising to New Heights
Last week, our Year 8 students came together for a meaningful and energising Reflection Day at Magdalene Catholic College, centred on the inspiring theme: “Rising to New Heights.” Drawing on the image of a hot air balloon lifting off the ground, the day encouraged students to reflect on their personal growth, resilience, relationships, and faith.
Students participated in a range of engaging activities, including energetic icebreakers, group discussions, music, drama, inspiring video reflections and a crowd-favourite basketball challenge that focused on persistence and learning from failure.
With creative skits, uplifting karaoke moments, and even a live dramatisation of the story of Zacchaeus, students were challenged to reflect on how they treat others and how they can aim higher in their daily lives. Special thanks to Fr James for sharing his wisdom during his talk, and to all the dedicated staff who made the day such a success. Below are some student testimonies of the day:
Lucy Katon:
Our Year 8 Reflection Day was a fun and meaningful experience. Father James spoke to us about faith, values, and making positive choices in life, which really made us think. We also enjoyed some great activities, including a fun balloon game, a basketball shooting game that got everyone competitive, and karaoke, where we sang our hearts out. It was a perfect mix of reflection, laughter, and teamwork, helping us grow closer as a year group while learning more about ourselves and each other.
Izabella Chahda:
Our Year 8 Reflection Day was a fun and inspiring day. The day was filled with laughter, learning, and connection. We spent the day playing games with friends, strengthening our bonds and enjoying each other’s company. Father James shared thoughtful words that encouraged us to reflect on our values and faith. We also had a lot of fun singing during karaoke and cheering each other on. A highlight of the day was when we explored the meaning of success through basketball.
As students return to their regular routines, we hope they carry with them the message of the day that through resilience, kindness, and faith, they can continue to rise to new heights.
Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Practice Expedition
Magdalene Catholic College Practice Bronze Duke of Edinburgh 2025
JOURNEY RECAP
Black Diamond Adventures had the pleasure of guiding Magdalene College’s Bronze Duke of Edinburgh cohort on their Practice Adventurous Journey last week, held from May 15th to 16th. Over the course of two days, the students hiked through the stunning landscapes of the Heathcote and Royal National Park.
We were incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm and determination shown by every participant. Here is a recap of our journey below!
Day 1 - Heathcote Train Station to Camp Coutts
Thursday morning saw Magdalene College students meet their Black Diamond Adventures leaders – Rob, Georgia, and Jack – with fantastic energy. Despite the early rain, spirits were high and the group remained undeterred.
Following a gear check and a route briefing, the students hit the trail with 13km ahead of them. They made great time along the fire trail, powering through the early part of the hike before taking a well-earned break at Battery Causeway.
From there, the group entered the Bullawarring Track, continuing to hike together, solve riddles, and make memories along the way. By midday, they reached the stunning Kingfisher Pools, where they stopped for lunch above the waterfall. A few brave students even took a dip in the chilly pools – a refreshing reward for their hard work!
Re-energised, the two groups continued their journey toward camp, making a stop at Bubble Cave to explore the unique rock formations. After a bit of adventuring, they pushed on and arrived at their campsite - Camp Coutts.
As more rain set in during the evening, the teams quickly adapted, moving into the dining halls for a warm and dry dinner. The students showcasing great independence while cooking their meals. Each group wrapping up the day with yarns checking in and reflecting on the day before finishing off with high energy games of 'Betty' and stories of 'Little Bobby'. It was a fantastic end to a great first day!
Day 2 - Camp Coutts to Heathcote Train Station
Day two began bright and early, with both groups rising to pack down camp and enjoy breakfast in preparation for another big day ahead. Spirits remained high as the students crossed the highway and entered the Royal National Park, ready to take on the final leg of their Practice Adventurous Journey.
Once on the trail, the students powered through 6km of fire trail, walking together with great energy and teamwork. Their first major stop of the day was the breathtaking Uloola Falls. Thanks to the rain the night before, the waterfall was flowing beautifully, making for a spectacular backdrop as the group paused for morning tea.
From there, the students followed the trail along the ridgeline, where they were rewarded with distant views of the city. They then descended into the serene Karloo Pools for lunch, taking time to rest by the natural rock pool before tackling the final challenge of the day.
The last stretch included a river crossing and a tough uphill climb—but the team came together with strong morale and celebrated every step of the way. Their determination and support for one another shone through as they reached the top.
At the journey’s end, the students gathered for one final yarn, reflecting on everything they had achieved over the past two days. From building resilience and showing determination, to making unforgettable memories with friends, it was a truly rewarding experience.
A huge well done to the entire group!
The students from Magdalene College should be incredibly proud of their hard work throughout their Bronze Practice Hike. The Black Diamond team are excited to watch the students progress and grow throughout the Duke of Edinburgh program and are looking forward to seeing the team again later this year to complete their Bronze Award.

Italian Club
Year 8 students discover fun and culture every Monday
"Chi si diverte impara meglio" (Those who have fun learn better!)
The Italian club is now in full swing! This exciting initiative is open to all Year 8 students every Monday during lunch and offers students a relaxed and fun environment to explore all things Italian. Whether they are interested in games, culture, language or simply want a place to unwind with friends.
Each week, students enjoy a variety of activities, from competitive foosball matches and Italian puzzles to card games like Briscola and creative arts. The classroom is always buzzing with energy, laughter and a strong sense of community.
While many come for the fun and connection, some students have also been using the club as a space to revise and get ahead of their Italian studies. With their writing examination on the horizon, it has been exciting to see students take the initiative to review vocabulary, ask teachers questions and practise their skills with their peers.
Whether you are a game lover, language enthusiast or just looking for a welcoming space, the Italian Club has something for everyone. We look forward to seeing more Year 8 students join us! Ci vediamo lì!

YOU SHOULD BE A COP INITIATIVE
Earlier this term two students from Magdalene were successful in being chosen to attend the “You Should Be A Cop” initiative run by NSW Police. This event gave students hands on experience and offered them a great opportunity to see what it would be like to be part of the NSW Police force.
The "You should be a cop Program" was a valuable and insightful experience into the life of police officers in NSW. The four-day program was busy, alongside senior students from other schools. We participated in a range of activities revolving around the day-to-day life of a police officer. These included mock scenarios, talking on the radio, completing arrests, and participating in the police fitness tests. Overall, the program was really enjoyable, and solidified my intentions to hopefully join the police after school." Jake Murray
UWS CAMPUS VISIT
Earlier in the term, approximately 65 Year 10 students visited Western Sydney University’s Campbelltown Campus. The campus tour allowed the students an insight into the various teaching spaces available at the University. Students were also given an overview of the various courses offered by Western.

If your child needs to leave during the school day, please write a note in their diary that morning. This helps ensure they are excused from class promptly, without the need for a message from the office, which often takes some time. This is particularly important on Tuesdays, when many students travel offsite for sport.
Additionally, please note that the College office is unable to accept deliveries of flowers or gifts for students.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
